DNS server record types

DNS: Domain Name System. it translates domain names to IP addresses so browsers can load internet resources. Each device connected to the Internet has a unique IP address which other machines use to find the device. DNS servers eliminate the need for humans to memorize IP addresses such as 192.168.1.1 (in IPv4), or more complex newer alphanumeric IP addresses such as 2400:cb00:2048:1::c629:d7a2 (in IPv6).

DNS records: these records provide important information about a hostname or domain. these records include th current IP address for a domain. these records are stored in text files on the authoritative DNS server.
There are 5 major types of DNS records:
A type: the " A" in record stands for address. An A record shows the specific hostname or domain. The A record supports only IPV4 addresses.
Use of A record:

  • it is used for IP address lookup.
  • by using the A record web browser is able to load a website using the domain name.
  • Domain name system based blackhole list (DNSBL)
  • A record is used block mail from spam sources
AAAA record: it points to IPV6 addresses.
    use of AAAA record:

  • these records are used to resolve a domain name to the newer IPV6 protocol address

  • these records are used for DNS resolution
CNAME record: Canonical name is record that points a domain name to another domain. in CNAME record alias doesnot point to an IP address and the domain name that the alias points to is the canonical name.
    Use of CNAME record:

  • running of multiple subdomains for different purposes on the same server.
NS Record: A nameserver (NS) record specifies the authoritative DNS server for a domain. in general, the NS record helps point to where internet applications like a web browser can find the ip address of a domain name
MX Record: Mail exchange record is a DNS record typw which shows where emails for a domain should be routed to. this record makes possible to direct emails to mail server.

Use of MX record:

  • it is used to hand off emails to a dedicated email server. *
